Anita was 15 years old in 1993, when in the course of an operation she was given blood transfusion. A year later she was advised to have another operation. She was admitted to a government (state run) hospital, where she was informed that she was HIV+, because of which the hospital refused to do the second operation. While there are no legislations on AIDS/HIV, the courts are now being approached to protect the rights of HIV/AIDS affected persons by invoking the general laws.
Anita who had done her secondary education was unaware of what HIV/AIDS was. She approached Samraksha who provided her with information and counselling. Samraksha then referred her to another hospital and arranged for her operation.
Before the operation, Anita got married. On hearing of this, the Samraksha counsellors convinced Anita that her husband, Sunil, should know of her HIV+ status. Sunil was told, and on testing found to be negative. Anita and Sunil were then counselled on their relationship and the necessary precautions that they have to take.
Sunil, now wants to marry again. Anita is also not happy staying with Sunil, and says she will go back to her parents' house on the condition that Sunil provides her with some financial security.
Only Anita's mother is aware that she is HIV+. Anita is being persuaded to bring her brother and father for counselling, so that a supportive family environment can be created if she decides on moving back to her parent's house. |
