Sharavati (name changed) was 16 years old when we first came into contact with her. She had been referred to us by an organisation working with street children in Bangalore.  She was not a professional sex worker, but sex was something that bought a meal or some ready cash when it was needed. She underwent a pregnancy test: she was. And that was not all she tested positive too: she was HIV+.

She was counseled, she was told about the precautions she now needed to take; the people she could go to when in trouble. She listened, and one day she disappeared, back into the streets, into oblivion. Is she still alive? We hope so. But it's difficult to believe that she is. Sharavati is now a memory. SAMUHA is a development organisation. SAMUHA works in the State of Karnataka in South India. All SAMUHA interventions encourage people to improve their bargaining capacities to cope better with environmental and socio-political factors

Quality of Life

SAMUHA works to improve the Quality of Life of the people it works with, within defined periods of time.

Vulnerability

  • who have little or no social supports;
  • who have been medically discharged from a hospital, but who still need nursing care and a place to recuperate;
  • who need to give a respite to their care-givers for short periods.

SAMUHA works with vulnerable people: under-5 children, women, the disabled, people affected by/vulnerable to HIV/AIDS, semi-nomadic herdspeople, Tibetan refugees, people without access to drinking water, people living in drought-prone areas, people living in slums, resource-poor people

SAMUHA has committed itself to fulfilling this need through ...the Bangalore residential centre for people living with HIV/AIDS...
